One in six workers shun the office

One in six employees are working from home permanently, new figures from the Office for National Statistics show.

Some 28% of workers have a “hybrid” week, combining office and home work, with workers in the highest income bands most likely to be working from home for at least part of the week.

The figures suggest that working from home and hybrid working have become a permanent feature, but the number of people opting out of the office is not growing further.

The ONS said: “Levels of working from home peaked during the pandemic, with almost half of working adults reporting having worked from home at some point in the past seven days in the first half of 2020.

“Two years later, when guidance to work from home was lifted in Great Britain, around 38% of working adults reported having worked from home.”

A total of 16% of working adults reported “working from home only” between last September and January, with 28% hybrid – both working from home and travelling in. Another 56% said they solely went out to work.
