ONS reveals London’s employment boom

London has added one million jobs in the past decade, according to the latest data from the Office for National Statistics.

At a time when the UK’s unemployment rate is at a record low of 4.5%, the capital’s workforce now tops 5,795,000.

As the data from the ONS shows below, it was not until the summer of 2011 when employment numbers started accelerating in the capital. Since June 2011, London has added 914,000 jobs, the equivalent of nearly 3,000 every week.

Jobs classed as “professional, scientific and technical activities” saw the biggest growth, a total of 409,000 extra jobs since 1996, an increase of 105%. Manufacturing is the only industry in which employment has declined.

The number of jobs in the construction industry increased by 2% between Q1 and Q2 2017, rising from 307,000 to an all-time high of 314,000. The latest figure is a 174% increase on the equivalent level in 1997.
