Opposition rises against the first major new railway for a century

Central Railway, a private company which last year raised “several million pounds” to produce a plan for the first major new railway line in Britain for more than a century is running into trouble after a tide of opposition from residents and local authorities. It has put forward a £3bn scheme for new a 180-mile line which includes a 6-mile tunnel under London. It is to be discussed in Parliament before the recess under a new procedure for major infrastructure projects.
