Mobile phone operator Orange is investing £8m in a new state-of-the-art customer call centre in Plymouth.
The 6,000 sq m (64,580 sq ft) call centre will be specially built at Langage Business Park, Plympton. It will be ready for operation in August 2000. Meanwhile Orange will be occupying a 2,000 sq m (21,530 sq ft) temporary site from October at Langage Science Park, one mile from its sister business park.
In August Orange announced plans to open three call centres in the North East.
Orange has always had a strong link with the South West: Bristol is the registered headquarters of Orange and is the site of the first Orange customer call centre. Orange already employs over 1,600 people in the region, and with today’s news, that figure will rise to over 2,700.
DTI minister Richard Caborn said: “This investment is a huge boost for the region and I am delighted that the DTI’s regional selective assistance scheme has played a part in attracting such a significant employer to the city.”
