Ove Arup proposes low-cost factories to build prefab homes

Ove Arup is proposing to set up small, purpose-built, low-cost factories to produce a new generation of prefabricated homes.

It says it is close to forming a consortium to build the factories at a cost of £3m-£5m each.

The Peabody Trust has almost finished the construction of a new prototype five-storey block of flats in Hackney, east London, using a modular system where complete rooms have been delivered fully finished. The Financial Times says various forms of prefabrication may be about to stage a revival.
