Oxford planners back Littlemore House turnaround

Revised proposals for the redevelopment of Littlemore House on Oxford Science Park have been recommended for approval.

The building, which sits on a 5.9-acre site, was acquired by the Lawrence J Ellison Institute for Transformative Medicine at the end of 2021. Last year, the purchase was complemented by the addition of plot 18 – a 3.5-acre site – acquired on a 150-year lease from Oxford Science Park.

Initially, the institute lodged proposals – which were approved by the Oxford City Council earlier this year – to create a research and development hub spanning both sites. However, the development was held back amid biodiversity issues raised by the Environment Agency with regard to plot 18.

In September, the institute submitted a stand-alone application covering only the redevelopment of Littlemore House and excluding the proposed work on plot 18. The move was expected to avoid delays and speed up commencement of construction.

If approved, the transformation of Littlemore House, designed by Foster + Partners, will deliver a 213,000 sq ft facility spanning research laboratories, recreation hall, central atrium, restaurant, administrative space and storage.
