Packages for valuers

In recent years there has been an explosive growth in the number of general-purpose software packages designed to exploit the potential of the microcomputer. Two of the more popular types of such a package are spreadsheets and databases. The former consist of systems that permit users to construct mathematical models using screen-based matrices of columns and rows (see “Mainly for Students”, p 79 of this issue). They enable users to create, for example, cash-flow projections. Database packages, in contrast, are file-handling systems that permit data to be stored, manipulated and output.

Both the above types of package have potential applications within the field of property valuations, and with this in mind Sheffield City Polytechnic have organised two evening workshop sessions to introduce the packages to valuers. The workshops, entitled “Microcomputer Packages for Valuers”, will be held on February 20 and 27 (6-9 pm) at the Department of Urban and Regional Studies. The first session will consist of an introduction to the nature and use of electronic spreadsheets using Supercalc 3. Database packages will be explored during the second session using the widely acclaimed dBASE II package. Each session will consist of a lecture followed by some two hours of supervised practical experience. The course fee is £40 for both workshops or £25 for a single session.

Further details of the course may be obtained from the Short Course Support Unit, Sheffield City Polytechnic, 33 Collegiate Crescent, Sheffield-S10 2BP (0742 665274, ex 3273).
