Paternoster design shortlist

The Paternoster Consortium’s architectural panel has selected a shortlist of eight architects to find a master plan for the redevelopment of the 1960s Paternoster Square complex adjacent to St Paul’s Cathedral.

Comprising five British firms, two American and one Japanese, the shortlist is: Arup Associates; Foster Associates; MacCormac Jamieson; James Stirling/Michael Wilford; Richard Rogers Partnership; Skidmore Owings & Merrill; Kallman McKinnell & Wood; and Arata Isozake.

A spokesman for the consortium said: “The overriding purpose of the competition is to select an individual, or team, capable of designing an overall scheme rather than to seek a final design solution at the competition stage.”

The Paternoster complex currently comprises about 600,000 sq ft of space which some observers think could be boosted to around 1m sq ft.

The consortium consists of Stockley — with a 50% interest — British Land, Barclays Bank Pension Fund and the Unilever Superannuation Fund.
