Pay-to-stay rent rises for 70,000 council tenants

More than 70,000 social housing tenants could find themselves paying more than £1,000 a year extra in rent as a result of the government’s pay-to-stay policy.

The policy categorises households with a total income of £40,000 and over in London and £31,000 elsewhere as high-income tenants, meaning they would be subject to a rise in rent of 15p per pound they earn above those levels.

One in 10 such tenants in London and the southeast should expect their rents to rise, councils warn. The average rise in London is put at £132 a month.
