Peel Holdings is planning a 200,000 sq ft extension to the Trafford Centre in Greater Manchester.
The £70m scheme will be situated off Phoenix Way, to the north of Barton Dock Road, on a site formerly known as Giants Field.
It will be linked to the existing scheme by a new, glass-covered bridge.
Trafford council has already conditionally granted a planning application for the scheme, which will be known as Barton Square.
In addition to retail, the development will also include elements of A3 leisure use and 630 parking spaces.
Gordon McKinnon, operations manager of the Trafford Centre, told EGi the extension will be completed in late 2006.
The development will be aimed at home furnishing retailers.
McKinnon admitted there is a “perceived weakness in household and furniture” at the 1.6m sq ft Trafford Centre.
Barton Square is the latest in a series of upgrades and extensions at the scheme.
Earlier this year planning was granted for a 14,000 sq ft extension to the Trafford centre’s food court, to be known as the Place, which will be completed in late 2006.
A new branch of John Lewis, totalling 220,000 sq ft, is due to open at the scheme in May.
Cushman & Wakefield Healey & Baker is agent for the Trafford Centre.
Architects Chapman Taylor and Leach Rhodes Walker are advising on Barton Square.
