Pemberton allowed to remain in Trumpington Hall

The High Court has heard how landowner Anthony Pemberton’s attempt to minimise inheritance tax almost cost him his right to live out his days in Trumpington Hall, near Cambridge, which hIs family has owned since 1715.

The court agreed to correct an error whereby four crucial words, “as regards the lease” were left out of the deed. The court said the mistake was probably caused by a rush to have the document drafted before a government Budget statement. The omission of the words “terminated” Pemberton’s right to occupy the property for the rest of his life. He can now remain there.
