McCarthy to manage Lehman Bros assets

John McCarthy is to join Lehman Brothers as head of asset management for the investments of the Lehman Brothers European Real Estate fund. The fund has investments in the UK, Sweden, Holland and Switzerland. McCarthy was previously managing director at US fund manager O’Connor Capital Partners.

Freeman joins King Sturge in central Europe

Mark Freeman has been appointed King Sturge director and head of professional services in Poland and head of valuation in central and eastern Europe. Freeman, who will also join the King Sturge board, has worked in the region for nine years and was previously based in Budapest as DTZ’s regional investment director.

Henderson appoints tax expert

Henderson Global Investors has appointed Boris Bergemann as senior manager for property business development in Europe. Bergemann, a tax expert joining from Linklaters Oppenhoff & Rädler, will be based in Frankfurt.

Savills adds Paris industrial associate

Savills France has appointed Armel Maicas as an associate in the Paris industrial department, run by Andrew Stacey. Maicas will work on business development for developers and occupiers in France. He previously worked for DTZ’s logistics arm.

Metzger to chair European valuers body

Alfons Metzger, president of the Austrian Institute of Property Valuation and Valuation Standards, has been elected chairman of the board of TEGoVA, The European Group of Valuers’ Association, for a three-year term. Metzger is head of MRG Metzger Real Estate Group.

Corio financial chief steps down

Dutch property company Corio’s chief financial officer, John van Leeuwen, resigned after the supervisory board asked him to leave. No further details were provided. Van Leeuwen joined Corio in 2001.

Lantinga heads Redevco Nederland

Luuk Lantinga has been appointed managing director of Redevco Nederland, a role which will also include supporting Redevco’s European expansion. Lantinga, who takes up his role in September, has worked for Dutch retailer Ahold since 1980, most recently as managing director of Ahold Vastgoed. Redevco has around 1,000 mainly retail properties worth €6.3bn, spread across 14 European countries.

Protego hires financial director

Property investment manager Protego Real Estate Investors has appointed Alex Sutherland as financial director. Sutherland was previously finance director of Mantra PR. Iain Reid, chief executive of Protego, which focuses on property investment vehicles and instruments, said: “We are now of such a size that we require a full-time finance director and we will benefit greatly from Alex’s expertise and guidance.”

Ortmanns fills new Aareal board post

Thomas Ortmanns has been appointed to Aareal Bank’s management board as chief operations officer. This new role includes responsibility for the bank’s IT activities and organisational structure.

Waas succeeds Weber at DekaBank

DekaBank has appointed Franz Waas as chief executive officer to succeed Axel Weber, who was forced to resign after a newspaper interview in which he said that he was willing to sell and liquidate Deka’s €6bn domestic open-ended property fund. Waas, who will assume his role by January 2006, joins from HSH Nordbank, where he is a board member.

Massone to run Pirelli’s Olinda fund

Italy’s Pirelli RE has appointed Carlo Massone as fund manager of its Olinda Fondo Shops closed-end property fund. He will co-ordinate all financial and property management for the fund. Massone was property manager at Italian insurer RAS in 1995 and joined Pirelli in 2000 to take charge of the company’s Italian joint-venture operations with Morgan Stanley’s real estate funds. The €742m Olinda vehicle, Pirelli’s third property fund, owns 44 properties.

Reijrink off Bouwfonds board

Jaco Reijrink has stepped down as board member of Bouwfonds, where he was responsible for mortgage and asset management business. This follows a decision to spin off the mortgage business and restructure Bouwfonds’ business model. Reijrink will now focus on advisory, management and supervisory activities.

Blackstone recruits French asset manager

Jean-Baptiste Mortier has been hired to manage Blackstone Group’s French property assets. Mortier joined Blackstone in 2003 after working for GE Commercial Finance Real Estate. He spent two years managing GE’s property in Belgium, Spain, Portugal and Luxembourg.

Smedley to lead Insight’s Continental campaign

UK fund manager Insight Investment has hired Tony Smedley as a senior director ahead of its plans to expand into the continental European market. Smedley, who will report to managing director of property Duncan Owen, will lead the investment programme, which is backed by an initial €600m eurozone fund allocation. Smedley joins from Fountain Capital Partners, where as a partner his principal focus has been on segregated accounts covering investment in France, Belgium, Spain and Germany. Prior to this he worked in Brussels for Jones Lang LaSalle’s Capital Markets Group. Owen said: “We expect to benefit from his experience in structuring European property funds as well as his active investment management style. His engagement underlines our commitment to further building our pan-European management capability.”

Researcher chairs IPF

Dr Paul McNamara, research director of Prudential Property Investment Managers, has become chairman of UK association the Investment Property Forum (IPF). McNamara is the first chairman from a research background, which he hoped property researchers would see as a sign of “their increasing centrality to today’s property investment market”. The IPF also made three board appointments: Phillip Clark, fund manager at Morley Fund Management; Dr Neil Turner, portfolio manager, Europe, at Alecta Investment Management (soon to become Schroders’ head of international property investment); and Nabarro Nathanson partner Amanda Howard.
