Hughes quits Schroders to head DPAM

Deutsche Property Asset Management (DPAM) has appointed Bill Hughes as chief executive. Hughes, previously at Schroder Property Investment Management, will manage DPAM’s portfolio of nearly £1bn of assets.

He will lead a property team of 16, including seven surveyors, and will report directly to Paul Berriman, chief executive of Deutsche Asset Management UK, and Don King, global head of DB Real Estate.

Prior to joining Schroders in 1997, Hughes was an associate director at Jones Lang Wootton Fund Management.

Paul Berriman said: “We are delighted that someone of Bill Hughes’ calibre has decided to join Deutsche to lead our property investment management division.”

Schroders has promoted John Hammond to one of Hughes’s roles, as head of strategy, and Jenny Buck will become head of the group’s fund of funds. Joe Froud will become head of direct property.

UBS takes on LLREI staff

UBS Global Asset Management has made six new appointments to its European real estate team. In London, John Purcell joins as senior portfolio manager, Jeff O’Dwyer joins the transactions team and Hugh Bigham joins the business development team. In Madrid, Peter Rohrenbach becomes head of transactions for Spain and Portugal, Pilar Valencia joins the transactions team and Manuel Hidalgo becomes an analyst for Spain and Portugal. The six were all previously at Lend Lease Real Estate Investments (LLREI). They join the senior management team at UBS, which joined from LLREI when it decided to suspend new fund management business lines.

Senior role for Thomlinson at KF

Nick Thomlinson has succeeded John Martin as senior partner at Knight Frank. Thomlinson joined Knight Frank as a graduate in 1974. He worked in the City office market, Hong Kong and Docklands before becoming head of the London residential division in 1990, and later the worldwide residential division. He will take up the role in May 2004.

Le Trung joins Citigroup

Former JP Morgan analyst Philippe Le Trung has joined Citigroup Smith Barney to cover the continental European property market. Le Trung will be based in the investment bank’s Paris office. He has spent the past year acting as a consultant to French companies converting to tax-transparent SIIC status.

New client director at Henderson

Gabi Stein has joined Henderson Global Investors as client director. Stein, who was previously an associate director in the European client services team at LaSalle Investment Management, will specialise in marketing property to institutional and third-party advised clients. She will join Henderson in early 2004 following maternity leave. Dr Arno Kitts, director of institutional marketing, said. “We are seeing a trend among institutional funds to include property as part of a diversified and balanced portfolio. Gabi’s property experience and knowledge will ensure that we are well placed to take advantage of this trend.”

Changes at the top for GE Real Estate

GE Real Estate has promoted Fredrik Widlund to managing director of business development and strategy and appointed Ilaria del Beato to head of asset management. Widlund, who was previously finance director for the UK real estate business, will be responsible for managing the originations and business development teams, and for encouraging strategic growth through existing client relationships and corporate and asset acquisitions. Del Beato joins from Lend Lease Real Estate Investments, where she was head of the European acquisitions team, with particular responsibility for the UK and Italy. At GEshe will be responsible for managing the company’s relationships with its investment partners, maximising returns from the portfolio and overseeing sales.

Rynell to head Swedish property body

Anders Rynell has been selected as chairman of Swedish Property Federation Fastighetsgarna Sveriges. Rynell is the manager of SEB’s real estate administration division. He was a board member of the federation between 1993 and 1996 and from 2001 onwards.

FPDSavills adds to Milan team

FPDSavills has appointed Mariacristina Laria to its international valuation team. Laria will be based in Milan and will be in charge of valuing shopping centres, leisure centres, hotels, office and residential properties throughout the country. Previously she worked in a similar role at CBRE.

Gatehouse team switch to Insight

Duncan Owen, Philip Gadsden and their team at Gatehouse have been recruited to Insight Investment, the asset management arm of HBOS. Owen will become managing director, property. Charles Hunter, who has been running the HBOS property team, will remain on the property management board, along with Gadsden and Alan Tripp. Former LaSalle Investment Management directors Owen and Gadsden set up Gatehouse in 2001 as a specialist property asset manager. Insight has more than £4.5bn of property under management.

City Box gains new financial head

Dutch self-storage company City Box, in which the Europa fund and Merrill Lynch have a majority interest, has appointed Wilbert Keunen as chief financial officer. He previously worked for Parking Management Nederland and Business News Radio. Macel Ottens, formerly of The Telegraaf newspaper group, has also joined as sales manager. City Box operates nine centres with a total capacity of around 65,000m2. The company has more than 5,000 tenants, making it the second largest self-storage operator in the Netherlands.
