A proposed 180-mile railway from Kent to the Midlands has attracted opposition ranging from members of the middle classes defending their habitats to nature lovers concerned to protect a rare snail’s sanctuary. The Central Railway promises to switch freight from road to rail by running container trains every six minutes from the Channel Tunnel to Lutterworth, in Leicestershire, on the £3bn line by the year 2010. A 20,000-strong petition will be handed into Downing Street today and next week MPs will try to block the development.
