Piano calls the tune in ‘shard of glass’ contract

World-renowned architect Renzo Piano has obtained a legal guarantee that his “shard of glass” vision for Europe’s tallest tower (pictured) will not be changed.

The Sellar Property Group has signed an agreement to employ Piano and abide by his plans for the 66-storey London Bridge Tower in Southwark.

It is believed to be the first contract of its kind.

Developer Irvine Sellar called the contract “a legally binding guarantee” that he and his partners would allow Piano to develop the 1,000 ft tower to his own specifications.

Sellar’s partners are CLS and a Middle East trust controlled by Simon Halabi.

The determination clauses in the RIBA standard architects’ appointment form have been deleted.

Even if Piano’s Genoa-based practice went into liquidation, it would retain the right to nominate a successor.
