Pickles calls in Sainsbury’s plan

Communities minister Eric Pickles has called in plans for a Sainsbury’s in Newport, near Telford, Shropshire.

The 50,000 sq ft supermarket, which has been proposed by St Modwen, is planned for a greenfield plot of land in the town. The scheme was approved by Telford & Wrekin council in April.

Local group Save Newport Campaign is objecting the scheme, claiming it will have a negative economic and environmental impact on the town.

David Parker, chairman of the Save Newport Campaign, said: “The scale of this proposal, in itself, equivalent to half of all the floorspace within the town centre, together with its location, has given rise to serious concerns about the potential impact not only in economic terms, but wider environmental impact concerns.”

Save Newport Campaign is a partnership between the town council, chamber of commerce and the Newport Regeneration Partnership.
