Pidgley calls for culture change

MIPIM UK:  There needs to be a change of culture in the planning system if the UK is to deliver the homes it needs, Berkeley chairman Tony Pidgley said today.

Speaking at a residential session at MIPIM UK this morning, Pidgley said local and central government, private developers and the public needed to change their attitude to housing.

“We need to change the culture of planning,” he said. Building more homes requires a change of attitude from ministers. As a housebuilder we need meaningful engagement from local authorities. We need clarity, consistency and collaboration.

“The prime minister has to own housebuilding. Housing gave the feelgood factor back to the economy,” he said. “We need strong political leadership and decision making. Planners shouldn’t be seen as regulators. And the public have to get behind it.”

And he said the private sector needed to change its attitude too. “Housebuilders and developers have to produce better places and better homes,” he said. “It’s about placemaking.”
