Pidgley pads up for new Oval quarter

Oval-gasholdersTony Pidgley’s Berkeley Group is working up plans to create a new destination next to the world-famous Oval cricket ground, SE11.

Berkeley First and Lambeth council will next week go out to public consultation on plans to redevelop the 4.8-acre Kennington Oval Gasworks site to create “a new piece of town” next to the test cricket ground, which is home to Surrey County Cricket Club.

Plans are expected to include around 500 homes and 61,000 sq ft of commercial space across towers rising to 12 storeys.

Berkeley teamed up with landowner Scotia Gas Networks in February 2014 when the energy company confirmed it would be decommissioning the gas holders on the site as the technology had become obsolete.

Kennington is benefitting from an uplift in values brought about by the regeneration of the nearby Battersea Nine Elms area. It could also reap rewards if a £20bn Crossrail 2 scheme goes ahead.

The draft masterplan for the gasworks scheme will be exhibited for six weeks in May and June.

Boyer Planning is advising.
