Pioneer Group has been granted planning permission for 72,800 sq ft of purpose-built lab space at the company’s BioCity Glasgow campus.
The development is part of the company’s wider expansion in Scotland and will comprise two phases: the first will include a three-storey building offering 33,300 sq ft of lab space, while phase two will include a two-storey building providing 39,500 sq ft of facilities.
The premises will cater to a range of occupiers – from start-ups to blue-chip companies – by incorporating flexible layouts and fully fitted grade-A space. As part of the development, tenants will be part of an innovation ecosystem that is set to include academia, government and investors. The new space will take Pioneer’s footprint in Scotland to more than 308,000 sq ft.
The 22-acre BioCity Glasgow campus, in North Lanarkshire, is home to companies including BioAscent, Sampled, Devro and Invizius. The life sciences development already offers 108,000 sq ft lab and office space across eight buildings.
As a result of the lack of lab development in Scotland, Pioneer is looking to deliver more than 200,000 sq ft of purpose-built space in the country over the next two years.
John Mackenzie, director for Scotland at Pioneer Group, said: “Providing suitable accommodation for scale-ups is crucial. Modern biotech and techbio companies have high standards for lab space and amenity, and crucially they demand proximity to life science cluster locations to support hiring the best and brightest talent. Our two new buildings’ currently planned two phases will be plugged into an already pioneering innovation ecosystem within BioCity Glasgow.”
