Residential property group Places for People has submitted an outline planning application for the £140m redevelopment of a former shipbuilding site in North Tyneside.
The firm plans to transform Smith’s Dock, in North Sheilds, into 800 new homes, plus shops and cafes, and a waterfront park, featuring “floating gardens”.
Smith’s Dock opened in 1851 and was a key part of North Tyneside’s shipbuilding industry. It closed in 1909, but was used as a ship repair yard until the 1990s.
Nigel Brewer, project director at Places for People, said: “Our planning application marks an important new phase in the history of Smith’s Dock. This is the start of its revival, where the site will, once again, become a destination for local people to live, work and socialise.”
