Planners back proposal for redevelopment of West India Quay, London Docklands

London Docklands Development Corporation is set to back plans for a massive redevelopment of former sugar warehouses at West India Quay, E14. The 1.2ha (3 acre) site comprises former sugar warehouses alongside Canary Wharf.

Planners are expected to tell a meeting tomorrow they are minded to approve the application for the 1.2ha (3 acre) site alongside Canary Wharf subject to a decision from the Environment Secretary.

Developers London & Easter Properties, Marylebone Warwick Balfour and Manhattan Loft propose converting a Grade I listed warehouse and building three new buildings for residential, retail and leisure use. One of the buildings will include a 218-bedroom hotel and a casino. Plans for a fifth building comprise a food store and multiplex cinema.

Their report accepts the proposed mixed scheme as appropriate for the location and in line with Tower Hamlets UDP and recent government planning guidance. In addition English Heritage has accepted the principle of the proposed 33 storey tower and the Royal Fine Art Commission supports the proposals in terms of urban design and architecture.

Grimley is advising the developers on the planning application.
