Legislation to force local authorities to post planning gain agreements on their planning registers has been put forward by planning minister Lord Falconer.
The order will mean that members of the public will have access to information stating how developers will contribute to the local area.
The DTLR has encouraged local authorities to post the agreements as a matter of best practice, but the public still view the agreements as secretive, based on “deals done in smoke filled rooms”.
The move follows on from a commitment in the Government’s planning green paper which promised that legislation would follow to making it obligatory to put section 106 information on planning registers.
The changes will come into force on 1 July this year to allow authorities adequate time to change their record keeping systems.
