Planning submitted for £79m Manchester regen

CEG has submitted a planning application for a £79m redevelopment on Manchester’s High Street.

The development seeks to deliver 361 new homes in the largely vacant 1960s building at 20-36 High Street, opposite the Arndale Centre.

The plan proposes a mix of one- and three-bedroom homes. It also seeks to reinstate the historic street pattern and turn Stationer’s Court into a pedestrian public space, connecting High Street with Church Street and Birchin Lane, in the Northern Quarter.

The ground floor and mezzanine levels would offer space for retail and restaurants.

David Hodgson, head of strategic development in the North for CEG, said the design will “reflect High Street’s former vibrancy and importance in the city”.

He added: “By reopening the historic Stationer’s Court as a covered plaza, we can enhance pedestrian access between the High Street and Northern Quarter and provide a light-filled covered space to eat, drink and shop, enjoying views of the large feature tree planting we are proposing on Birchin Lane.”
