Basingstoke council gives 3,520-home regen thumbs up

Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council has approved development of up to 3,520 homes in the first phase of one of the largest residential schemes in the South East, in Basingstoke, Hampshire.

Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council and Hampshire County Council intend to build up to 8,000 homes on the 2,080-acre Manydown site, which they jointly own.

The plans were originally lodged in 2017 and revised the following year. Urban&Civic is master developer on the site, with additional backing from the Wellcome Trust. The partners will sign a contract by the end of July.

The first phase of development is expected to comprise 3,200 homes, of which 40% will be affordable. It includes two primary schools with land reserved for a potential new secondary school, two local centres, businesses, shops, community facilities and a 250-acre country park.

John Izett, Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council’s cabinet member leading on Manydown, said: “The process to get us to this point has taken too long but I am confident that the result will be a better-designed, more sustainable and successful place to live.

“It is essential that lessons are learned and we work together with our soon-to-be development partners, Urban&Civic and the Wellcome Trust, as well as with central government, to ensure that the new high-quality homes at Manydown are built as soon as possible to meet the needs of our growing population for a great place to live and work.”
