Caradon District Council fears the Government’s failure to finance a £17m realignment of the A38 through Broadmoor Farm, Saltash near Plymouth in Devon, could jeopardise the commercial development of a 182ha (450 acre) site.
Two schemes at Broadmoor Farm have already won outline consent for a business park. The first was submitted by the Bond brothers, two local farmers who own most of the site. The other was submitted by Caradon District Council.
But Alan Hartridge, Caradon’s director of planning services, warned that if the government fails to finance the realignment the land would be developed in a piecemeal fashion.
“If we fail to get the road, the Bond brothers will develop a few shops and houses on the 121.41ha (300 acres) which they own.” Hartridge does not believe that this will benefit anybody. “Our prime objective is to make sure the whole area is developed in such a way as to attract a major inward investor.”
Roads minister David Curry is to visit the site next week but the Highways Agency refused to comment on the situation.
