Plans to build a new gigafactory at Coventry airport have been put on hold due to the possibility of unexploded Second World War bombs at the site.
Rigby Group, which owns the airport, has been seeking permission to close the airport and build a gigafactory on the site. Rigby hopes that if it gets the go-ahead it will attract interest from the big battery makers of China, Korea and Japan.
However, planning permission has now been delayed after Coventry City Council ruled there is a good chance that development of the site will find unexploded Luftwaffe bombs .
After ordering a “detailed unexploded ordnance threat and risk assessment” the council has now recommended any plans be put on hold until safety measures are complete.
