Plans in for Edinburgh’s £2bn West Town development

Plans have been submitted for a £2bn 20-minute neighbourhood in Edinburgh.

West Town Edinburgh, the development consortium headed by Drum Property Group, has filed the application for a 7,000-home scheme between the Ingliston Park and Ride and the Gogar Roundabout at the western gateway of the Scottish capital.

The 205-acre scheme is regarded as one of the most strategically important large development areas in the UK.

Proposed facilities include schools, medical facilities, civic and community space, bars, restaurants, cafés, shops and other commercial spaces. Also included are plans for 27 acres of accessible green space, including a 5.5-acre central park.

Edinburgh’s tram route runs directly through the site and a new tram stop will be created for the development.

West Town Edinburgh was formed by Drum in April 2021. It signed a memorandum of understanding with the city council in May last year.

Drum managing director Graeme Bone said: “We now have the opportunity to make West Town an exemplar, sustainable 20-minute neighbourhood on a par with the best new developments taking place across the UK and Europe.”

Drum is currently on site with major mixed-use projects across Scotland, including the 1m sq ft office scheme at Buchanan Wharf and the 850,000 sq ft resi-led Candleriggs Square development, both in Glasgow.

Bone added: “Drum has a proven track record of delivering high-quality large-scale communities across Scotland, and our ambition for the area matches that of the proposed Edinburgh City Plan 2030. We look forward to continuing to work with the council to advance our shared vision to create a new, sustainable urban quarter for the city.”

The West Town planning application was submitted following a 12-month local consultation programme.

It is hoped that work will start on site before the end of 2024, with the first phase of homes and community amenities being ready for occupation from early 2026.
