Plans have been submitted for the Science Central development on the 24-acre former Scottish & Newcastle brewery site in Newcastle upon Tyne.
An outline planning application was handed to Newcastle council yesterday for the mixed-use scheme, which will include scientific research facilities alongside retail and residential space.
Science Central forms a major part of the 20-year 1PLAN strategic framework from 1NG, aimed at regenerating Newcastle and Gateshead.
Jim McIntyre, 1NG chief executive, said: “Science Central represents one of the most significant economic development opportunities for a generation. This application is a major milestone in the step towards realising the exciting vision for the site, and the creation of a new sustainable urban quarter in the city centre.”
Professor Chris Brink, vice-chancellor of Newcastle University, which is playing a key role in the project, said initial preparations had already begun for the drilling of a 1.2-mile geothermal borehole to get energy to the site.
He added: “The site will become a hub where the big societal challenge of sustainability will be tackled. The vision is to further develop Newcastle as a city of science so that it continues to play a pivotal role in the new economy.”
