Plans revealed for Wythenshawe town centre regeneration

Manchester City Council has launched a consultation around its regeneration plan for Wythenshawe town centre.

The site was recently bought from St Modwen and early proposals have been drawn up to be reviewed by the community. Feedback on the proposals from local people and businesses will be sought until the end of November.

The council is looking to redevelop the current Wythenshawe town centre into a garden city with a civic square, and a large boulevard-style public realm. The proposals also include delivery of thousands of new homes on council-owned brownfield land next to the town centre.

In addition, the plans include a culture hub comprising artist studios, performance space and a community cinema in the former Co-op department store. A food hall, co-working and managed offices, and retrofitting of existing buildings in the town centre also feature in the plan.

A £20m Levelling Up bid was submitted to the government in August and is expected to be used to jumpstart the transformation of Wythenshawe Town Centre.

Manchester City Council executive member for housing and development Gavin White said: “Wythenshawe town centre has a huge amount of potential and this investment will help improve the offer for residents and attract people to the centre as well, while also creating new jobs and new homes for the community.”
