Plans submitted for £15m Luton Mall extension

Capital & Regional’s The Mall has submitted a planning application for a £15m scheme to extend The Mall Luton.

The shopping centre owner and operator plans to remodel the St Georges Square end of The Mall Luton to include an additional 95,000 sq ft of retail space and around 200 car parking spaces.

A six-storey building is included in the plans, submitted to Luton Borough Council, which if approved will add 180,000 sq ft to the total area of The Mall Luton taking it to 831,000 sq ft.

Subject to approval, construction will commence in spring 2007, with the eight new retail units created expected to be open for trading by Christmas 2008.

Broadway Malyan are architects for the scheme.

The plans have added urgency to Ballymore’s effort to unlock plans for a 500,000 sq ft redevelopment of Luton town centre.

The Irish developer is preparing to do battle with the council over the Power Court development, located across the dual carriageway from St George’s Square, after being requested to submit a new application for the scheme.

Ken Ford, chief executive of The Mall, said: “We have a commitment to Luton and its shoppers to provide the best possible shopping experience.

“Our proposals will provide enhanced retail units in order to improve the retail offer in the town.

“They will also improve The Mall Luton’s relationship with the town – by providing bright, modern shop fronts and a landmark new entrance, we will vastly improve the Mall’s presence onto St George’s Square and help create an attractive area for the people of Luton to shop, eat and relax.”
