An ambitious proposal to re-create the Union Canal basin in Edinburgh for a £35m luxury residential scheme has been lodged with planners.
The former Arnold Clark car showroom site in Fountainbridge has been earmarked for the new basin,113 luxury flats and 20 affordable homes.
M&M Lochrin, a joint venture between housebuilder Mactaggart & Mickel, Miller Developments and British Waterways, wants to build two apartment blocks alongside the extended basin, as well as commercial or retail units totalling almost 6000 sq ft.
Andrew Mickel, director with developers Mactaggart & Mickel, said: “At the moment there is a hole in the ground where there had been a basin in the past.
“We have demolished 14 buildings on the site to make way for an L-shaped basin near the Edinburgh Quay phase II site.”
The new basin will extend to over 7500 sq ft.
Omar Elmi, director of Miller and British Waterways’ joint venture, Edinburgh Quay, said: “Our proposals for the site mark the next stage of regenerating Fountainbridge, following the successful development of Edinburgh Quay Phase I and the ongoing construction of Phase II.”
The development will create a link between the Fountainbridge and the retail and leisure district of Home Street and Tollcross, presently severed by the showroom.
A previous mixed-use proposal for the site was rejected by planners for failing to take account of the surrounding area.
