Plans unveiled for £50m Carmarthen retail-led scheme

Simons Developments and Carmarthenshire Council have unveiled plans for a 275,000 sq ft mixed-use scheme in Carmarthen, West Wales.

The £50m scheme on the town’s 10-acre mart site will also be anchored by a 60,000 sq ft three-storey Debenhams store, the developers have revealed.

Meanwhile, negotiations with one of the UK’s leading cinema operators are close to being finalised and a further announcement is expected early next week.

Giles Walter, director of Simons Developments, said “The council’s brief emphasised the need for quality and the ability to deliver – and that is the basis on which we were appointed.

“It is a joint venture with the county council – probably the most significant shopping and leisure scheme that has ever been proposed for Carmarthen.”

Plans include

  • An 18,000 sq ft provisions market between Marks & Spencer and the new Debenhams
  • A seven-screen cinema, seating 1,000
  • 21 two-storey shops, ranging in size from 900 sq ft to 5,000 sq ft
  • A bowling alley and bar
  • A 1,000-vehicle car park with entry near the junction of St Catherine Street and Morley Street

The new development will incorporate the lower end of St Catherine Street, which will be closed to traffic and pedestrianised during trading hours, while a rerouted Fair Lane will become a service road running to the rear of the shops and the cinema.

Letting agents are Ian Metcalfe & Co of Cardiff and Donaldsons of Bristol.
