Plans unveiled for expansion of Selby shopping centre

Yorkshire-based Dransfield Properties has unveiled plans to increase the size of its Market Cross shopping centre in Selby town centre.

The scheme, unveiled today during a two-day public consultation session, involves moving the Selby Abbey primary school to make way for more shops.

Dransfield proposes to increase the size of the Morrisons supermarket on James Street from 48,244 sq ft to 71,795 sq ft, increase the number of town centre car parking spaces from 234 to 406, and create three new purpose-built town centre  shops.

The new scheme involves the removal of Selby Abbey primary school to make way for more shops. A new school will be built on Portholme Road.

Dransfield bought the Market Cross shopping centre for £7m in January.

Dransfield opened the first phase of its Three Lakes Retail Park on Bawtry Road in Selby last year and is due to start work on the second phase of that development this spring.

The existing Market Cross Shopping Centre in Selby consists of 22 shops with 48,000 sq ft of retail space.
