Plans unveiled for former Butlin’s camp redevelopment in South Wales

Barry Action Joint Venture Partnership has unveiled plans for a multi-million pound redevelopment of the former Butlin’s holiday camp at Barry Island in South Wales.

The Welsh Development Agency and Vale of Glamorgan Council formed the partnership to regenerate the whole area. The holiday camp site provides 18ha (45 acres).

Proposals include a commercial leisure development on 4.6ha (11 acres) fronting the beach at Whitmore Bay. The site will include a swimming pool, entertainment building with a 2,000-seat theatre, bars and restaurants. A further 7.61ha (18.8 acres) will be redeveloped as housing.

Work in progress includes redevelopment of the former docklands. Over the last five years £3m has been invested in environmental improvements on Barry’s seafront.

King Sturge & Co is advising the partnership.
