Plans unveiled for new Oxford urban district

Plans for a new urban district in Oxford have been unveiled by Thomas White Oxford, on behalf of St John’s College at the University of Oxford.

Oxford North, previously known as Northern Gateway, will provide 936,460 sq ft of offices, 480 new homes, a 180-room hotel and 23 acres of open space, including three new parks around the A40 and A44 linking the city centre with Oxford Parkway.

The new district will also create a new central street with 26,910 sq ft of retail, and undergo £100m of infrastructure development, including a £30m scheme to improve the walking, cycling, bus and highway networks linking the city centre with Oxford Parkway.

A public consultation is to start on 2 July prior to an outline masterplan application, with detailed plans for the first phase to be submitted at the end of July.

The project team includes Fletcher Priest Architects, Townshend Landscape Architects, Savills, Gardiner & Theobald, Peter Brett, Hoare Lea, EDP, AKT II, and BSG Ecology.

Julian Barwick, project chairman of Oxford North, said: “Oxford North will be not just of local importance, but also significant at the UK and international level, supporting the world-class research that takes place in the city and creating a setting where it can flourish and add to the economy.”
