Plant professor appointed to run £74m millennium project in Cornwall

The Eden Project has signed Professor Sir Ghillean Prance, director of the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, as director of science.

The Eden Project is a £74m millennium scheme to build giant plant conservatories in a former Cornish clay pit at St Austell.

One of the “biomes” will contain the biggest tropical rainforest ever seen indoors; the other a Mediterranean-type environment. The first areas will open Easter 2000.

The Millennium Commission has contributed £37m. Most of the rest has been given by other public sources and donations. It needs to find another £6m from companies.
