PLATFORM_ and Urban Centric have secured planning permission for a 206-home build-to-rent scheme in Cardiff city centre.
PLATFORM_ will deliver the homes on the site of the former Browning Jones & Morris builders merchants premises on Dumballs Road.
The scheme, PLATFORM_ Cardiff, will include more than 7,200 sq ft of amenity space, including a residents’ lounge, gym and communal roof terraces, and a further 6,700 sq ft of ground-floor retail space over two units, one of which will be a convenience store.
Start on site is expected Q2 2019, with completion due in Q1 2021. PLATFORM_ will retain and manage the homes.
The addition makes PLATFORM_ the first owner-operator to have BTR developments in England, Wales and Scotland.
Jean-Marc Vandevivere, chief executive at PLATFORM_, said: “The Cardiff acquisition underlines our position as one of the UK’s leading build-to-rent players, with developments across the whole of Great Britain.
“PLATFORM_ will be delivering the high quality, well priced, purpose-built rental housing that will be crucial to ensuring Cardiff’s success as the city looks to capture and retain talent to support its ongoing growth.”
Stewart Knight, acquisitions director at PLATFORM_, said: “The site fits perfectly within our acquisitions strategy, being close to the railway station, city centre retail and established offices within a vibrant and growing city.”
Savills advised Urban Centric.
The green light from Cardiff Council follows recent approvals in Glasgow https://www.egi.co.uk/news/platform_-gets-green-light-for-100m-glasgow-btr-scheme/ and Sheffield https://www.egi.co.uk/news/platform_-plans-approved-for-335-btr-apartments-in-sheffield/ . PLATFORM_ manages 600 homes in regional hubs and commuter towns and aims to deliver 5,000 units within the next five years. Including Cardiff, it will have over 1,000 units under construction this year.
