Falmouth developer Devington Homes is planning a £14m scheme to convert Plymouth’s fire-ravaged Grand Hotel into 45 apartments.
Devington, which recently completed a neighbouring £35m residential scheme of 107 apartments called Azure, has acquired the 6-storey Grand for an undisclosed sum from Classic Lodges of Chorley.
The deal is subject to planning permission being granted for the redevelopment.
The 77-bedroom Grade II listed hotel on The Hoe has stayed closed since the blaze in September 2003, when nearly 100 guests and staff were evacuated.
Its complete interior was damaged by the fire and the water pumped in to extinguish it.
Built in 1879 by John Pethick, it is close to where Sir Francis Drake finished his game of bowls prior to defeating the Spanish Armada in 1558.
The planning application includes retention of the hotel’s facades but the demolition and redevelopment of all the interior.
“Our intention quite simply is to save the Grand, restore its classic facades and link it into Azure with the creation of a further 45 apartments,” said Devington managing director Lawrence Butler.
Architects for the Grand conversion are Lacey Hickey Caley of Plymouth.
