PM asked to halt looming Westminister parking charges

Councillors and West End traders have asked prime minister David Cameron to block Westminster city council from implementing new parking charges.

Sir Philip Green, councillors and the Coffer Group are contesting the council’s decision to charge motorists for evening and Sunday parking with effect from 9 January. Currently, it is free when parking on single yellow lines.

Westminster Labour Group leader cllr Paul Dimoldenberg has now written a letter to Cameron urging him to intervene.

Attached to the letter is a summary of objections, including from David Coffer, chairman of Coffer Group.

Coffer said: “Several thousand businesses are likely to be affected by your extreme measures. I would anticipate that, once these appeals become live, Westminster will lose several million pounds of rating income.”

Dimoldenberg ends the letter with: “Please act now to save the West End economy.”
