PMI data shows ‘sharp slowdown’ in building industry

The construction sector cooled last month, with housebuilders experiencing a “particularly sharp slowdown” and infrastructure projects drying up , according to a closely watched survey. Researchers also warned that a shortage of skilled workers was affecting the industry.

The latest purchasing managers’ index (PMI) for the construction sector fell to 52.9 in August from 55.8 in July. The reading is well below the 54.9 forecast by economists, although anything above 50 indicates growth.

Yesterday’s manufacturing PMI data also showed that it was the weakest month for factories since the Brexit vote.
