Work on Centros Miller’s 1m sq ft Northern Quarter scheme in Portsmouth, Hampshire, will start next year after the secretary of state confirmed a compulsory purchase order.
The £500m development, anchored by Marks & Spencer and John Lewis, replaces the Tricorn shopping centre – often voted one of the UK’s ugliest buildings.
It will provide 80 new shops, cafés and restaurants, 200 flats and 2,300 parking spaces.
Completion is scheduled for 2011.
