Chancellor Gordon Brown said the government would commit record levels of funds to education facilities.
In today’s Pre- Budget Report he promised the development or refurbishment of 12,000 schools and the rebuilding of 100 colleges by 2011.
The renewal programme will involve half of all primary schools and 90% of all secondary schools.
The chancellor also repeated the government’s 1997 commitment to deliver 3,500 children’s centres by 2012.
Capital investment in education, which was £1.5bn in 1997, will rise from £8.3bn in 2007/08 to £10.2bn in 2010/11.
