Premier Inn is to open a new 120-bedroom hotel and restaurant at Worcestershire County Cricket Club’s New Road ground in central Worcester.
A detailed planning application for the hotel and executive suites has been submitted to Worcester council. Construction is expected to start this September, subject to planning.
The new hotel and restaurant is part of a redevelopment plan, which will see Whitbread, Premier Inn’s parent company, investing £7.5m in the hotel and restaurant and Worcestershire County Cricket Club investing in excess of £2.5m to create new conference and executive facilities at the ground.
The club previously secured planning permission for a hotel in 2009 but has drawn up new plans after the original scheme stalled over funding.
John Bates, head of acquisitions for Whitbread Hotels and Restaurants, said: “Our research tells us that there is an undersupply of quality hotel rooms in Worcester which we are keen to put right. A new Premier Inn will not only help to attract more tourists to the historic city, but will also provide business travellers with affordable and centrally located accommodation.”
