John Prescott is expected to resist pressure from councils to scale down his south-east England housebuilding targets.
The deputy prime minister wants 43,000 homes a year to be built in the region.
South-east councils’ representative Serplan will vote on Prescott’s proposal on Monday. Labour officials believe a move for councils to reject the figure and vote for 33,000 homes instead are inspired by the Conservative leadership to embarrass the government before a general election.
