More than 200,000 new homes will be imposed on Milton Keynes and the South Midlands over the next 16 years, under proposals unveiled yesterday by John Prescott, the deputy prime minister.
Some 65,000 more homes than are needed to house the local population will be built in Milton Keynes, Northamptonshire, and parts of Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, one of four designated growth areas for housing.
Prescott said the extra provision of houses was to achieve a “step change” in the supply of homes in South-East England. Besides Milton Keynes, “growth towns” include Bedford, Luton and Northampton. The strategy will require 11 new transport schemes and will attract £235m in funding to build schools and health facilities.
