Preston tycoons targeted in VAT fraud investigation

Property belonging to the Preston-based Patel family, which owns large chunks of Preston city centre, has been raided by police investigating a VAT fraud and counterfeit goods ring.

A dozen properties, including the headquarters of the family’s Faisaltex business, were targeted yesterday as part of HM Revenue and Customs’ Operation Mimosa, which has resulted in 15 arrests.

The Patel brothers – Arif, Faisal and Munaf Patel – built a £105m fortune in textiles and own a £42m property portfolio, including several buildings in Preston city centre.

The family wants to build a £100m tower scheme on a site already earmarked for Grosvenor and Lend Lease’s Tithebarn scheme in the city centre.

The 19-storey scheme is proposed for the Tradex building, which is owned by the Patels.

Police told the Lancashire Evening Post that that they had seized “enormous” amounts of documents, counterfeit goods, computers and cash during the operation.
