Pret’s new owners likely to prioritise US expansion after £1.5bn deal

Pret A Manger’s new owners are expected to prioritise a trans-Atlantic expansion above increasing the sandwich chain’s UK presence after buying it for £1.5bn.

Leisure industry experts predict that JAB Holdings, the owners of Douwe Egberts coffee and Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, will use its experience of the American market to amplify Pret’s small presence in the US.

The experts believe expansion across the pond and potentially in Europe will be more pressing for JAB than boosting the number of sites in the UK given the pressures on consumer spending here and the broader malaise on the high street.
