Primark posts 1% sales uplift

Primark UK sales were 1% ahead of last year, in a trading update for parent company Associated British Foods, for the 16 weeks to 5 January 2019.

Like-for-like sales in September and October were ahead, but reduced footfall dampened November sales.

Primark attributed global sales growth to an increase in selling space.

Last year it increased space by 0.3m sq ft, and it expects to open a further 0.9m sq ft this year – with openings in the US, UK and Slovenia.

In the UK, it relocated to a larger premises in Harrow and extended its Merry Hill store in Dudley.

A 160,000 sq ft store in Birmingham is expected to open in April.
