Prime CUT for urban experts

by John Kirkwood

The normal focus of this column is how innovations in information technology can be applied to the property sector. However, a related and in some ways more challenging theme is how technological innovation impacts on urban development and management. This area of research is pursued by the Centre for Urban Technology (CUT) at the University of Newcastle.

CUT was formed in 1995 and “aims to understand the changing relationships between technical networks – water, energy, telecommunications and transportation – and the spatial, economic, social and environmental development of contemporary cities.”

CUT has just published its research programme, which provides an overview of its main research themes and lists selected research projects and publications. Key publications include Splintering networks: cities and technical networks in 1990s Britain (Graham S & Marvin S, Urban Studies, 34(2)). Also, last year Routledge published Telecommunications and the City: Electronic Spaces, Urban Places by Stephen Graham and Simon Marvin.
