Prince Charles has joined the battle to save Bishopsgate Goodsyard in east London from comprehensive redevelopment.
Lashing out at London Underground and Railtrack’s plans for the site, the Prince of Wales has backed proposals by English Heritage (EH) which would retain the listed Braithwaite Viaduct and the Victorian vaults.
Writing in Monday’s Evening Standard, Prince Charles asked: “Why isn’t a more creative approach possible? One needs to find a more sensitive and worthwhile alternative than yet another predictable proliferation of glass-sided offices.”
EH failed to get the 10-acre (4.05ha) site listed last year, but did manage to get Grade II listing for the Braithwaite Viaduct.
The Goodsyard’s existing tenant, entertainment group Planit Events, has also launched a legal battle to prevent clearance of the site for the East London Line extension before funding has been secured.
